Instrument | Fabricate something using primarily two different materials.  .


The inspiraton for this special instrument really comes from the first week of fab assignment -- I found it so interesting so hear the sound that was made from simply the two wood blocks hitting each other. 

and from simply two hands grabbing them, it feels super intuitive and natural to make this into a instrument for movement -- 

I could already imagine how dancers can dance and move with them and create the soundscape.

Circular Stage | Laser Cut two of the same thing


My first time trying the laser cutting, I made them to cut small quarter-circles (as a mini demo for thesis). I then decided to use this assignment to create a mini prototype of the thesis that I want to build -- a drum made by wood -- especially this would be a great opportunty to practice the joint structure, that would be used for the large scale “drum” later on.


So after the little taste of laser cutting, to know about the curf of the laser and able to estimate for how much more I shoul leave for the joint structure, I cut down 1 by 1 square and measured using caliper. 

After a lot of trail and errors with the laser machines, finally I cut one set of the quarter square + supported joins -- 



I put them all together, and realized that it run a little bit too loose. Before I tried different sizing on wood, I also testedon the cardboards. But I don’t think that really helped me to estimate how the wood measurement would be like. So after bunch of adjustment in illustrator (each version requires new measuement for everything), I decided to go for it and did another set with wood, and it worked out -- (I remember it was 3.4 mm)


I followed through that size and laser-cut the rest. Eventually, I use the woodglue to glue te side to the quarter-circles, and put them on the joint-supportive structure on the bottom. 



I also 3-d printed the foot, to represent the dancer that would be dancing on the drum. :) 🦶🦶





Week 2
Jan 30- Feb 5, 2026

Xiangban 响板 “Sound Boards” | Make 5 of something

Must use two or more methods of fabrication - no laser, no 3D printing
Tools we have covered:Band Saw, Miter Saw, Panel Saw, Disc/Belt Sander, Drill Press
 

I decided to make traditional Chinese percussion instrument -- 响板 -- after researching online. It looks very similar to 快板 -- a type of traditional isntrument that is used in a stand-up performance in China. 

It was helpful that I found a reference picture of how the Xiangban 响板 look like. 



I first drew lines on the 2 by 4 blocks according to the estimated thickness (base on desk research) and then cut them by the band saw. 

 
At first I tried to use the laser cutter (recommnded by shop staff) but I tried for a couple of time and wouldn’t work out-- so I turned to just drew and traced the shape directly by hand, and then used the band saw to free hand followed the trace and cut them into the shape. 



Then, I realized that each board might be a little bit too thick -- yet I can’t directly use the hand to hold the board through the band saw. So with the help of the shop staff, we got creative -- used the tap to tae all 5 blocks together, then cut through the band saw to make each one thinner one by one. Then I used the drill pess to drill the holes that the ribbons/ strings woul go through to thread the boards together. 

Eventually, a lot of sanding. To make sure that the shape are really the same for all 5 boards, I sand them together a lot, mainly through the oscillating spindle sander. 

Additionally, to stay true of how the 响板 look like and is being played, I also sanded the surface to each board individually so that they are not just only flat -- since in that way it’s hard to make sound and be played as a instrument. 



Week 1
Jan 23- 29, 2026

Before coming to this class, I have never touched anything in the wood shop -- all the machines & tools somehow intimidates me a lot, it’s finally the time to take a stab. 

Waves // Comma | Make a Box

For the first assignment, I decided to go with something that have natural curve & organic shape. In the beginning I wanted to do a box that have the top and the bottom that coul perfectly match each other in a three dimensional way ---- like a “Yin-Yang” in 3D. But I heard that it requires a lot of sanding to build the organic 3d shape. 

Yet I stll decided to pursue something that’s flowy -- maybe in a 2D flowy shape. 



So I used the Miter saw to cut the long piece 2 by 4 wood that I got from Bruno’s. I estimated the sizeof the box and cut a rectangular shape out, since I decided to use one 2 by 4 both as the box and the lid. 

I drew the shape of a wave -- or at elast in my head what represents a wave -- on the wood, then used the band saw to carve out the part that does not fit the shape. Then I used the belt sanding machine as well as the oscillating spindle sander to do the initial sanding. 


I then drilled a pilot hole in the wood, and cut them into half -- one as the lid and one as the box itself -- using the band saw. I then further used the band saw to cut out some material so that the lid and bx have slighly different curves for the flow. 



after, I used the drill press for the first time to make the inside of the box -- the hard pat defnitely was to keep the box stable on the drill press, especially because the wood is in irregular shape, we got creative (with the help of shop staff) and used other woodblock at the bottom as well as cardboard as supportive materials. 

I then used the chizze to further carve out the wood, since the drill press can only do circle-shapes. 


Finally, more sanding!! and drill the screw in. 

The sanding really took a long time -- I used the dremel since it’s way easier to sand the inside of the box. Then I sued the sanding paper to do mre detaild sanding. 

I then drilled the hole according to the pilot hole that I made before. Thanks so much Ines for helping, since it was a bit hard to do use the drill for some reason (it wouln’t drill down.) 


Eventually we’re here -- look at this ocean wave baby (or comma baby!!) I’m very very poud of them!!

In the last week, I also added a little bit of blue-colored aluminum foil at the bottom of the box, since a tiny part of it cracked a little bit during the final drill/ sanding/ refinement.
